The Constituency Labour Party & the Branches

Hornsey & Wood Green constituency together with neighbouring Tottenham make up the London Borough of Haringey and we share the same Haringey Council.

The constituency is  divided into 10 Branches: Alexandra, Bounds Green, Crouch End, Fortis Green, Highgate, Hornsey, Muswell Hill, Noel Park, Stroud Green and Woodside. Branches are also known as wards because they mirror the ward divisions in the constituency.

Once you’ve joined the Labour Party, your branch secretary will automatically send you regular mailings about meetings as well as other activities. The branch secretary is also your first point of contact if you have any queries.

If you are disabled and there are any arrangements branches can make to enable you to attend meetings and other activities, please let your secretary know.

What happens at branch meetings?

Each Branch meets on the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month.  All members are warmly welcome to attend. Branches elect an Executive Committee and other branch Officers at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). They also elect delegates to represent the branch on the CLP’s General Committee (GC).

We hold discussions, send motions to the GC and organise most of our campaigning and other activities at branch level. Any member who lives in the ward can submit and vote for motions at meetings.
The branch also chooses LP candidates to stand in the Haringey council elections.

The General Committee of the CLP

The constituency General Committee (GC) meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. All members can attend but only delegates (elected from branches, or from affiliated trade unions or socialist societies) can vote.

An Executive Committee and other officers are elected at the AGM to help run the CLP, to organise election campaigning and campaigns on many different issues.  Our elected Labour representatives attend to tell us about their work.

The GC also elects delegates to Labour’s regional and National Conferences, and other bodies and forums.

These include the Local Campaign Forum (LCF). Along with representatives from Tottenham CLP (who share Haringey Council), the LCF oversees local election campaigns and relations with our Haringey Labour group of councillors.

What Is Campaigning?

Many members join local or national Labour groups to campaign on issues like the NHS, environment, Universal Credit and Education. Check out our section on Campaigns to find out more.
The Labour Party sometimes holds national Days of Action focussed on a specific issue. Different CLPs and groups across the country leaflet the public, organise street stalls and other activities
to increase public awareness and generate support.
Branches sometimes organise campaigning activities in their wards or for the whole CLP. Hornsey Branch organised a protest in their ward to support Black Lives Matter. Fortis Green Branch organised a large public meeting in support of refugees and invited local support groups to bring stalls, share information and sign up volunteers.
Labour members spend a lot of time leafleting, knocking on doors and phoning local people to ask about what issues affect them and how Labour could help. This is a great way to reach out to the local community and build support for our policies.
The CLP also supports campaigns organised by trade unions and other progressive organisations: from local workers fighting against low pay to Haringey Stand Up to Racism. Our Hornsey & Wood Green Labour Party Banner has accompanied members to national protests from Stop Trump to Defend the NHS.
We campaign for all sorts of elections, from local councillors to the London Mayor and our MP. Campaigning involves: reminding people that elections are happening, informing them about Labour’s candidates and policies, and making sure people turn out to vote on the day – so we can elect Labour to key local and national positions.
While we can’t knock on doors during Covid, you can help us campaign online by sharing our social media tweets and posts.
