Now that the dust has settled on last week’s Budget, it is clear that the latest efforts from the Conservative Chancellor and his Liberal Democrat partners fall far short of what we need in Hornsey and Wood Green.
Across our area, people are not feeling the recovery. Rents are soaring, prices continue to rise and incomes are down.
But instead of real support – on childcare, on housing, on proper training and jobs for our young people – we are seeing policies increasingly focused on the few not the many. A giveaway to wealthy pensioners does not address the real needs of many across Hornsey and Wood Green – young and old.
I’ve seen the value of real help into work for young people, and the huge impact that extra childcare help can bring. These sorts of measures, coupled with a freeze on energy bills and cuts in business rates to support our small businesses, are the way we can start making a real difference for local people, in an economy that works for all of us.
Propped up by the Liberal Democrats, the Tories have had their chance.
