Lucy Powell, MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Education, Kevin Courtney, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Claire Kober, Leader of Haringey Council, Catherine West, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green debate the Government’s plans for education

Compulsory academisation has been defeated but…

  • an Education for All Bill will aim to ‘persuade’ all schools to become academies by 2022
  • unfair and oppressive cuts will hit Labour education budgets and destabilise authorities fighting academisation: for example, estimates suggest that by 2020 Haringey will lose, in real terms, 17% of education funding while Conservative Essex will only lose 5%
  • unelected Regional Schools Commissioners, answerable only to the Secretary of State, will each be in charge of the education of 900,000 or so children and young people
  • to make this authoritarian system function, individual schools and headteachers will lose independence as they are pushed into academy chains
  • parents and local people will lose control of the way their children and their communities are provided with education they pay for
