It was great to see Haringey and Islington hosting the first-ever gay marriages over the weekend.
I’m proud that a further barrier to equality has been removed. Our communities round here have a strong record fighting for equal rights, over many years, and it is down to all those campaigners that we have reached the position we are in today.
As Islington Council Leader I fought and defeated attempts to block equal treatment, including the campaign to allow registrars to opt out of administering civil partnerships, and we can all be justly proud of what we have achieved.
I’m proud too that Labour has been at the forefront of these campaigns, bringing about equalisation of the age of consent, gay adoptions, rights to serve openly in the military, civil partnerships and scrapping of the homophobic Section 28 legislation.
And I’m proud that it was the overwhelming support of the Labour Party which ensured that the equal marriage reform became a reality.
