Catherine West welcomes first ever UK prosecution for Female Genital Mutilation

The Crown Prosecution Service today (21 March 2014) announced the first-ever UK prosecution under the 2003 Female Genital Mutilation Act.

Charges have been brought against a doctor at the Whittington Hospital in Islington, Dr Dhanuson Dharmasena, and against a second man, Hasan Mohamed. The two men will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 15 April.

Catherine West, Labour’s candidate for MP in Hornsey and Wood Green and former Leader of Islington Council, said:

"I welcome the work which Islington Police have done to date to bring this crucial first case of FGM to prosecution stage. Both the police and the Council have been committed to eradicate FGM.

“For some time women in the community, assisted by groups such as the Manor Gardens Centre in Islington, have campaigned actively on this issue and now I hope their work will bring results and help to put a stop to the practice of FGM.”
