The chancellor should use this year’s budget to support parents in Haringey struggling with the soaring cost of childcare, says Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green Catherine West.
The average cost of a 25 hours a week nursery place is now over £130 a week, while a parent in Haringey buying 50 hours of childcare per week for a child under two would face an average annual bill of nearly £14,000 per year.
Said Catherine: “Massive childcare costs like this prevent many parents going back to work or increasing their hours. They are a major drag on the ability of families to make work pay and on the economy overall.
“Helping more women into work or to work the hours they want is good for families, children and the economy.
“That’s why Labour will expand childcare provision for 3-4 year-olds from 15 to 25 hours a week, worth over £1,500 per child and benefiting 2,050 children in Haringey.
“Hard-pressed families desperately need help. Instead of cutting taxes for millionaires the Lib Dems and Tories need to act now – starting with the Budget on March 19th.”
