Catherine West: Only Labour can be trusted to get rid of the bedroom tax

“The Lib Dems’ hypocrisy over the Bedroom Tax is shocking but sadly unsurprising," says Catherine West, Labour parliamentary candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green.

“As I go out and about in Hornsey and Wood Green, the human cost of the bedroom tax is evident. It’s an unworkable policy which simply penalises some of the most vulnerable people in our area, while all social housing tenants are now in fear, of rent arrears and even eviction.

“The Lib Dems in government – including our own Bedroom Tax MP Lynne Featherstone - enabled this policy to happen. With their Tory partners they voted it through, and have backed it consistently.

“Only this February, when Labour tabled a Bill to scrap the bedroom tax, the Lib Dems ran for cover. But they’ve been in government with the Tories for four years, and could have reversed this policy at any time.

“And they’ve broken their word on tuition fees and VAT, and backed tax cuts for millionaires

“It’s increasingly clear that the Lib Dems cannot be trusted. The only way to cancel the bedroom tax is to elect a Labour government next year.”
