Catherine West: Let's all get behind the Living Wage

Labour's MP candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green Catherine West welcomes Living Wage accreditation for the Arthouse N8, and calls on other local employers to pay the Living Wage.

Arthouse is the most recent Hornsey and Wood Green business to sign up to the Living Wage, receiving its certification last month. Catherine's visit marked the start of Living Wage Week, when the London Living Wage, an hourly rate adopted voluntarily by employers, was officially raised to £9.15 an hour.

Catherine said:

"People should be paid fairly for a hard day's work.

"Making sure staff are paid at least the Living Wage is the sensible approach to recruiting and keeping them. It also shows a public commitment to doing the right thing.

"I would like to see many more local employers follow the Arthouse's great example.

"To encourage this a Labour Government will give tax incentives to companies which adopt the Living Wage."

Catherine pioneered the London Living Wage for council staff and those working for council contractors when she was Leader of Islington Council.

"One of my proudest moments in politics was when the cleaners at Islington were awarded the London Living Wage," she said. "Overnight the women cleaning the Council Leader's office went from £11,000 to £14,000 a year. Suddenly we were on a journey to a fairer place.

"We are all worried by the widening gap between working people and the wealthiest in London.

"We know that inequality is bad for all of us, not just those with no money in their pockets.

"So let's get behind all those employers who pay the Living Wage, and roll on 2015 when they will be helped by a Labour Government that wants to see a well-deserved pay rise for Britain."
